TRAINING

The Sports and Recreation Commission notes that for sport programmes to be effectively discharged there is need to have a vibrant sport education programmes that support the delivery of the programme. Our promise to the nation is to develop and implement a capacity building system that supports and improves the overall delivery of sport and recreation development in the country.

Apart from having our own sports programmes, we also assess the suitability of the sports programmes in line with the internationally accepted training principles and standards. The programmes include among the following:

The Diploma in Sports Studies is one of the sports education programmes that the SRC embarked upon in 2004 in partnership with the National University of Science and Technology (NUST). The advent of this programme was informed by the need to equip sports practitioners (coaches, administrators and technical officials) with the requisite skills and competencies to help them organize their sporting activities effectively. The duration of the programme is two years. Aspiring candidates for this programme should have the following Qualifications:

  • 5 O Levels with a Grade C or better in English language, Mathematics and any other Science subject.
  • Individuals who are participating in sport will have an added advantage.
  • Sport administration and or coaching certificate.
  • Physical education specialization will be an added advantage.
  • Experience in sport management at club or association level.
  • In exceptional circumstances special entry will be granted to those who do not have the normal entry qualifications.

The Sport and Recreation Commission embarked on the Executive Diploma in Sports Management (EDSM) in 2006 in partnership with Zimbabwe Institute of Management. (ZIM) The programme was designed to equip National Sports Associations executives with leadership acumen to effectively lead their institutions. Aspiring Candidates for this programme should be practicing Sports Administrators at National level and must meet the following criteria:

The Sports and Recreation Commission recognizes volunteers as the ‘life blood’ of the sports industry not only in Zimbabwe but the world over. To this end the SRC is a partner in a network of organizations that promote the development of youth leaders in sport through a volunteer exchange programme. The Youth Sport Exchange Programme (YSEP) brings together:

  • SRC Zimbabwe,
  • Zambia,
  • Namibia,
  • CHRISC Kenya,
  • Tanzania,
  • Uganda,
  • Norwegian Olympic,
  • Paralympic Committee,
  • Confederation of Sport (NIF) Norway.

Every year Zimbabwe sends two volunteers for twelve months attachment to Norway and another two volunteers for attachment within Africa for one year. In return SRC hosts Norwegians and other volunteers from the South- South exchange for one year.

The YSEP programme has over the years helped to expose SRC volunteers from both the urban and remote rural parts of the country who have been formally absorbed into the employment of the SRC and the sports industry at large.

Some of the former Volunteers who have benefited are:

Role  Volunteer
Provincial Sport Coordinator for Harare Province Newstein Chipoya

So far over 50 young people have benefited from this programme. Participants in this programme should be working in various SRC programmes and should be below the age of 25.
