Following the postponement of the Zimbabwe National Youth and Paralympic in August to December as a result of Typhoid cases which were reported in Gweru, the Sports and Recreation Commission together with the Ministry of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation will be convening a National Games Assembly from tomorrow to be attended by Provincial General Managers, Sport competitions Directors, the Local Organizing Committee for the Games and other key Government Arms. The purpose of the Assembly will be to deliberate on the following issues:
- Determine the exact timing of the Games in December
- Discuss and agree on the Games competition format
- Receive and consider a Progress update report from the Local Organizing Committee
- Conduct an inspection tour of the Games Competition venues
- And discuss any matters incidental to the success of the Games
“It is in this regard that all the 10 Geographic provinces and the 12 Virtual provinces as well as the Sport Competition Directors are requested to attend this important meeting so that together we can make the critical decisions relating to the hosting of the Games in December.
“We are aware that in December the timing is not too flexible because of the festive season hence the importance of the meeting in Gweru next week cannot be overemphasized”, said Tirivashe Nheweyembwa.
The Games were supposed to be held in August from 15-27 but were deferred owing to the outbreak of typhoid and as the organizers we saw it prudent that there was need to postpone them in order to ensure that we do not expose the athletes and officials from the risk of contracting typhoid. It was expected that the Games were to be held in 2 blocks, block 1 was to have under 13 and 18 Youth and Paralympic Games athletes and block 2 was to have under 23 Youth Games athletes and open age Paralympic Games athletes.
